An Introduction to Crochet

Crochet came from the word croc, which is French for hook. Crocheting is an art of fabric creation from a thread, cord or other materials using a crochet hook.

Beginnings

Some say that the craft of crocheting originated from some parts of South America, Arabia and China. However, there has been no true evidence of this claim. It eventually became popular in the 1800 in Europe. Some say that the process used in crocheting was present during the ancient times but the hook itself which is used in crocheting was not yet in existence. People back then used their fingers which were bent to be able to make loops and chains.

It's somewhat clear that crocheting, as we know it today began to be seen during the mid 1700s . This was the time when tambour embroidery, reached Europe. Tambour embroidery was done using a smaller crochet-like hook. The earliest evidence of crocheting dates to around 1800. Samples should have been present in archaeological finds and missions if crochet existed before th e 1800s. Some claim that crochet pieces can be found in Egyptian tombs and some say that there were crochet works which were made by nuns to beautify early churches. It has been argued that crocheting is a very simple technique and it most probably had its beginnings during the ancient times. But it is a fact, no pieces have been found to legitimize these claims about ancient times crocheting.

In the 1800s, crocheting became a lace substitute. Laces back then were quite expensive, and people turned to crocheting to be able to produce less expensive fabrics. Crocheting didn't need much equipment and other tools and people of every kind can do it. People started to crochet natural fibers and used hooks which were made of brass, ivory and hardwood.

As history went on, crocheting became more and more popular, finding its niche as a cottage industry. The craft supported some communities when their livelihoods were displaced by imperialism. The items were purchased by the middle class, or those who were emerging in society. Some say that fabrics which were made out of crocheting were seen as a mere imitation of the symbol of richer families. The people who were able to afford the more expensive fabrics which were made from more expensive methods hated crochet.

Queen Victoria somewhat mitigated the bad impression of the people against crochet. She purchased crochet laces which were produced by the Irish and learned crocheting herself.

Evolution

Crocheting was done mostly with thread from 1800 to 1950s. The most common kinds of crochet methods were the filet crochet and the crochet in the round. They were worked in rows of closed or open mesh to build patterns. Steel hooks were mass produced and were popular beginning 1900.

In the 1950s, crocheters were already using thick yarns to be able to create less detailed clothing and fabric. The craft of crocheting using thread was popular up to the 1960s. Homemakers were so much involved in crocheting but during the 1960s, more and more people became hooked to crocheting, especially the younger generations. The popular patterns began to emerge such as the granny squares. These were worked in round and incorporated bright and fun colors. The interest of the younger generation in the 1960s gave crocheting a much needed boost in terms of popularity.

Method

In the modern sense, crocheting is done by doing a slip-knot on the hook, and this is pulled with another loop. The second loop is pulled through the first one and this pattern is repeated to create a fabric. The chain is worked in rows or turned to create a pattern. Rounds are built by pulling many stitches through one loop. These methods distinguish crocheting from other kinds of fabric making methods.

Crochet is a fairly young kind of art if one compares it to other fabric-making procedures. It has gone through several evolution steps to be able to become the art which we know of today. With the advent of different technologies and modern ways of making fabric, crochet is in danger of being wiped off its existence. However, there are still many people who love crochet and hopefully, these people will pass on the art to the generations after them.

The Truth Behind Stamp Collecting and Value

As the old adage goes, you will never see or realize the value of something unless it is gone.

In stamp collecting, stamps do not have to disappear or go kaput before somebody knows or understands their value. In fact, people had long been knowledgeable about the value of stamps that is why stamp collecting was born in the first place.

Simply put, if not for the value, stamps would have remained the usual miniature section in the envelope that bears no significant value except for the charges that a person has to pay before their letters will be sent.

However, history has it that the value of stamps had been inclusive since the postage stamps were born in May 6, 1840.

From that time on, stamp collecting had gradually transformed into a more profitable hobby as more and more people find the value of the stamps increasing as the years pass by. Most of these valuable stamps are rare and hard to find, hence, most stamp collectors consider them as authentic collector's items. Hence, they are more than willing to buy the item even if it will cost them lots of money.

Since then, stamps had undergone many enhancements. From the original stamp that was first created in 1840 up to the latest design of stamps, stamp collecting continues to put up with the demands of the society, as they remain valuable in history and in the society.

For this reason, most experts contend that stamp collecting is not just a simple example of a hobby. For most, it is one good way of diversion or relaxation. For others, stamp collecting is a highly profitable venture that they even converted this hobby into an extremely profitable business.

In this context, stamp collecting is seen as a tool for financial advancement. Because of the value that the stamps hold, many people are finding their way into earning more money simply by trading some rare stamps or those that have higher value than what others think of.

With the value that goes with it, stamps are deemed as valuable as the coins. In fact, additional features on the stamp surface add more value to the item. Such additions were perforations and artistic designs.

Since July 1, 1845, the value of stamps have increased from 5 cents with over 300 miles travel distance and the letter's weight amounting to ounce, to 34 cents, the 2001 value of stamps based on the 1st ounce. As it values increases, so thus its economic value.

As a matter of fact, many economists claim that stamp collecting puts more value to the country's economy more than any kind of hobby available in the society.

Here is a list of some of the reasons why stamp collecting is deemed valuable in the community:

1. Good investments

Stamp collecting is considered by most businesspeople as something that triggers good investment opportunities. This is especially true when people are into rare stamp collecting. Rare stamps are more valuable than the ordinary stamps. The reason behind this is that the more the scarce a particular stamp is, the greater the demand for that stamp.

Consequently, if the demands are higher, contrary to the law of supply and demand in economics, the value of the stamps increases. This does not necessarily mean that the older the stamp is, the higher the value. This is a common misconception among stamp collectors.

The main idea here is that by the time old stamps are no longer seen or are hard to find these days, their level of scarcity increases. But what most collectors do not know is that the value of the rare stamp will still depend on the amount that is associated with it back in history.

For instance, a "used copy" of a $5 stamp can almost cost a stamp collector $2,000, and because the production of these stamps back then was only limited, the level of scarcity is increased and will continue to increase as the demands for this particular stamp continues to grow.

2. Good sources of revenues

Stamp collecting is considered as a good basis for revenues especially on countries that have inadequate or restricted production of stamps. This is because since stamp collecting is very popular, most stamp collectors would try to find their way to more valuable stamps in just about anywhere.

Hence, small countries are able to generate more profit by simply creating more stamps that are not necessarily used for postage stamps. Most of these stamps are solely made for stamp collecting.

Indeed, stamp collecting is a highly organized activity that generates benefits and profits not only for the collectors but for the whole community as well.

Is it Safe to Sell Coins to a Dealer?

Coin collecting can be a lot of fun. This hobby which dates back to 2500 BC is much larger now since people are now able to collect currencies from other countries.

If a person decides to dispose of some of the coins in the collection, it is necessary to know its value by looking at a coin catalog or price guide. There are many ways to do this and one is looking for a coin dealer to do business with.

There are a lot of coin dealers around. Some can be found by asking the local coin club or a numismatist who can give a good referral while others can be found at an auction or in a coin exhibit. These people frequent such events looking for a good buy to add to an existing collection. A lot of these individuals can also be found on the web.

To be sure that the person is getting a good price from a coin dealer, it is an excellent idea to visit more than one place to find out who is willing to buy it at the highest price. If the person feels that the price is too low, then perhaps it is better to wait until another time since the value of coins depends on scarcity, condition and demand.

Some people think that doing business with a coin dealer isn't a good idea since this person will offer to buy the coins at a lower price. This notion however is wrong since there are ways to ensure that this person will be honest.

To avoid by being conned by someone who claims to be a dealer, it is necessary to determine that this person is a member of the Professional Numismatist's Guild. This organization is composed of the world's renowned collectors of antique coins and paper money. Since there are strict rules that members abide by, one can be sure that the transaction is safe.

Coin dealers are not just there to buy something, these people may also offer for sale a coin that is valuable to the other person. By getting to know the dealer, an agreement can be reached that will benefit both parties, which does not always end mean buying, but also trading or bartering.

Everyone has the potential of making money even if this starts out with only a few coins. By knowing where to find these rare collectibles and doing business with a reputable dealer, one can be sure of making a profit – if not a small fortune.

Tips to perform blood test on the quilting fabrics:

What could be more disheartening than to see you favorite fabrics literally bleed to death in your quilt? Perhaps the answer will be, to buy and wash quilts without performing a simple blood or bleed test on your fabrics.

Bleed test:

Bleed test is absolutely necessary, if you are working with cotton fabrics. Cotton fabrics have the propensity to lose their dyes. Fabrics with dark colours like red, green and purple are also at significant risk, with this respect. Losing dyes can be particularly disastrous if you don't pre wash your fabrics. To prevent this, you can perform a few simple bleed tests. The simplest bleed test can be performed by placing a piece of your fabric in soapy water for about half and hour. After this stipulated time, if the water is clear, then you can go ahead with quilting. However, if the water is stained, you can unceremoniously conform that your fabric bleeds. Another test to conform whether your fabric bleeds or not is by placing the piece of fabric in soapy water and then without rinsing placing the same fabric on a white and clean paper towel. If the paper gets stained, you can be perfectly sure that your fabric has all the chances of losing its dye on being washed. Some fabrics who initially lose their dye however stop doing so after a couple of washes. However, if the fabric keeps losing colour with every wash, then it is advisable that you discontinue its use in quilting.

Prevention:

To ensure that your fabrics stay healthy, you can take a few precautionary measures. Firstly, You should buy fabrics only from the brands you trust. Also, before washing, you can treat your fabrics with commercial dye fixatives. This prevents fabrics from losing their colour. Preferably, only mild detergent should be used while washing your fabrics. Detergents loaded with chemicals can harm your fabrics beyond recognition. However, you can prevent such mishaps by following a few guidelines and by performing the indispensable blood tests on your fabrics.

Where To Find Guidance on a Radio Controlled Project

Undergoing the entire complicated process of building a remote controlled model is a very daunting thing to do. If you are passionate about getting to know radio controlled hobbies better than anyone else, then you will definitely have to start somewhere. However, with no previous experience you will probably run into quite a few hitches as you work on your project. For example, if you are building a model airplane and you plan to install a motor in it, there are countless things that could get in your way. Maybe you don't understand how exactly to piece together the wings. Maybe your plane catches fire every time you try to run it. Maybe you don't even know where to start.

No matter what is getting in your way, there are many ways that you can get past it. A good start for any radio control project is to find plans or blueprints that you can follow for the entire length of the project. You can buy kits that include all of the pieces, or you can find plans on the internet and cut your own wood. It just depends on how much effort you want to put into the project. After you have the plan (which should include diagrams and exact measurements), you can begin to gather supplies. If you stick with everything that the plan says, you will be much less likely to hit a snag. As you work, you will learn skills required to make personal touches to the plan.

The best way to have constant support no matter what goes wrong is to make friends with some sort of expert in the field. Is your uncle's wife's cousin a fanatic for remote controlled hobbies? Get his phone number, call him up, and see if you can get some help. Most of the time people will be more than happy to share their knowledge with someone who is interested in similar things. You can also meet radio control gurus at conventions, races, or even supply shops. It is good to know someone locally, since you can meet wit them and show them whatever your problem is, and they can even glue a few pieces together, or do whatever else needs to be done.

For small inquiries that don't require hands-on assistance, you can use the internet. There are numerous online communities for radio controlled hobbies, which come in the form of message boards, mailing lists, or blogs. These can be found with a quick search engine keyword, and are usually home to numerous extremely intelligent people whose combined knowledge covers pretty much everything about radio controlled hobbies. If you ask a question of these communities, you will almost immediately receive multiple helpful responses. Using advanced technology like digital cameras and microphones, you can get an even more personal response.

Finally, you can get your information from a good, old-fashioned book. Libraries are full of so much knowledge, it is surprising that they go so unappreciated in today's culture. If you go to the library in search of books about radio controlled hobbies, you will find numerous resources that will help you out greatly. Your query could range from the electronic aspect to the construction. In a similar vein, you can subscribe to magazines that regularly cover this sort of hobby, giving new plans, details, and advice for all subscribers.

If you use all of these different resources, you should have no problem building and enjoying the radio controlled hobby that you've always wanted. Embarking on the journey alone is definitely not advisable, since you will have to do many things that no normal human is faced with. From cutting the wood into precise chunks that will make up the different components to installing the electrical parts, each step requires close attention to detail. It is good to have backup in case you don't quite understand something.

What is Crochet?

In the early 1800s, lace made materials are much expensive than the crochet products. In Europe, some communities use crochet products to identify their social status, which only indicate that they can afford crochet products and other lace made items. The craft of crocheting only requires less expensive supplies and materials, which are commonly threads and yarns that they can purchase in nearby markets.

Many assume that the craft of crocheting and knitting evolved in countries like China, Saudi Arabia, and Brazil. They have come up with this theory because of the cultural tradition of clothing used by the people living in these countries. Many experts also say that the craft of crocheting was more essential to bend the forefinger rather than its necessity for creating crochet and knitted products.

In the early periods of imperialism, where the art was practiced in the western part of Europe recognize crocheting as the main source of livelihood among people living in villages and communities. Most royalties consider wearing a crochet product symbolize wealth and power. During these days, crocheting and knitting is the pleasure of many people. It has developed as an art of creating very good crochet crafts and designs.

A person can acquire a variety of yarns and threads that are used to make a crochet product. There are different textures and colors he may choose depending on the type of pattern or design that he will create. There are basic types of yarns that are in the market nowadays. He may find baby/fingering, worsted weight, chunky, sport/baby, and the bulky types of yarns, which are commonly used in crocheting and knitting.

Yarns are typically labeled by their types to distinguish the yarns' quality. This helps in identifying which specific yarn would be suitable for a particular crochet product. Moreover, a person may also need to know the amount of skein, care instructions, gauge, and the fiber content of the yarns.

Here are some other supplies aside from the yarn that are needed to create a particular crochet product.

1. The knitting needles are very essential in crocheting. They are commonly straight aluminum, wooden and plastic made materials. They can be availed in different sizes from 2 millimeters to 15 millimeters. They are purchased in pairs where they feature a knob and pointed edges. This design was made for preventing the needle to slide when it is left on the unfinished crochet product.

2. The crochet hooks are used in catching the loops of thread used in crocheting. They also draw the stitches made from loosening and sliding from the chain stitches. They also come in aluminum, plastic, and wooden made materials. The wooden made crochet hooks are the commonly used in doing a crochet product because it is easier for the fingers handle and it is also considered as the most affordable.

3. The pattern diagram is very essential in creating a crochet product. This serves as the guide on how he will follow the instructions and outline of the design. Most patterns are usually easy to follow especially if the person is highly skilled n crocheting. For most beginners, there are patterns, which are more basic and simple. They are especially designed for them to practice and understand simple patterns of crochet products.

4. He may also need the use of other resources that will provide him sufficient basic crocheting instructions such as books and magazines. There are instructional diagrams that he may use in cases he would like to choose other designs on how to make a crochet hat, crochet pillow, crochet scarf, crochet bag, and other items that can be possibly made in crochet.

5. There are also special supplies that are needed in making special crochet products. Lace made and doilies are required to be worked on using stainless steel crochet hooks. These special hooks have a different size compared to those regular wooden hooks.

Crochet products are mostly made for the pleasure of creating beautiful patterned designs. They may be displayed in exhibits especially if the tools and supplies that were used are certified crochet materials. The price of the crochet product may also depend on how long it was made by a person. Although others only work on crochet products for their own pleasure and satisfaction for finishing a particular pattern, people still find it helpful in applying their skills to generate income.

Gourmet Gift Basket – It Is the Though that Counts!

For many people today, having extra money means that the gifts given can be a little more expensive. One can put a spin on the old gift basket by adding gourmet gifts. One idea for a gourmet gift basket could be the addition of a fine wine and good cheese. This can make the bond between friends grow. Any gift basket put together should not be about the money, rather the gift itself, but the quality of the gifts can make a difference!

Another idea for putting together a gourmet gift basket is to personalize it with things that a friend would love. One can individualize the gift and make it special with a gourmet gift basket. Even if someone isn't into gourmet products, they will be excited to get a gift with a twist of their normal food. An example would be giving someone homemade licorice instead of store bought. One can do the same with chocolates, and cookies. Whatever someone likes, it can be made into a gourmet gift basket with a little thinking. When you take the time to put a gift basket together don't be shocked when you may receive one for yourself some other time of the year. It really is the gift that keeps on giving for the whole year.

Things to Stay Away from

Don't try to put a gourmet gift basket together with items so expensive that someone begins to feel out of place. Gourmet goods can sometimes be very expensive and this can worry the person receiving the gift. Not everyone you know will have extra money and be able to reciprocate accordingly. Remember this; the cost of the gift shouldn't take away from the meaning of the gift. Don't give a gift so expensive that someone else cannot keep up with. A gourmet gift basket should have an upscale edge without being over pricey. Friends can be friends without the money division.

Sometimes, the extra little thing on the basket can be a personal thing meant for just that person. If this is the case, then make sure it is special because of the gift and not because of the cost. Stay away from a gift that is obviously expensive. Someone's mate may feel guilty that they couldn't afford such a gift and the spouse received it from someone else. Make a gourmet gift basket special by filling it with love and admiration for another. Not only will they feel special, but this could change their entire attitude when they realize someone really cares about them.

The Best Place to Find Remote Control Helicopters

Where is the best place to find remote control helicopters? I can tell you for sure that you'll first want to look in an electronics store, such as Radio Shack, Best Buy, or Circuit City. There you could find remote control helicopters for a pretty reasonable price and you will probably get durable model. My recommendation for finding remote control helicopters would be to first go to your preferred company's online site and look through the models they have for sale.

Since you probably won't be able to use the helicopters in the actual store, it's sometimes better to just read about them online and then order them through the company. Yes, you may need to pay a bit extra for shipping, but I think it's worth it. Then when you receive the remote control helicopter, you can immediately take it out to your back yard and see how it performs.

Save the box in case it ends up not being as durable as the company promised it would be. You should always make sure you get a warranty for your remote control helicopter because you might end up needing to send it back in exchange for a different one. I would suggest getting one with welded sides or even a continuous plastic sheath so you don't have to worry about it cracking or rusting. Whatever you do, make sure you research it well and buy your helicopter from a reputable company, because you certainly don't want to have to return it soon after you purchase it. Your best bet would probably be Radio Shack if you want to get a good deal, but you could also try the Discovery Store or even Brookstone if you're looking for a model that will really impress people.

You need to think about your motivation ahead of time: would you rather a model that looks flashy in the air, or one that doesn't break if you end up crashing it into the ground? These are things you need to consider before you make a purchase, because you might have to compromise quality for beauty or vice versa. My recommendation is to get a remote control helicopter that can withstand the test of time and crashes, because just choosing the one that looks best to you isn't really the best way to go about it. If it's pretty and you crash it, the remote control helicopter will quickly become ugly, and you should not have to deal with that.

In either case, a remote control helicopter is a great idea for fun on a bright sunny weekend, and as long as you do your research and know what you're looking for ahead of time, you'll be sure to get the remote control helicopter that best suits you and you can really get years of enjoyment out of it. And if it so happens that the first one you choose turns out to be poor quality and you have to purchase another one in a short time, just know that you learned how durable they need to be, and next time you purchase a remote control helicopter, you can be a more informed consumer.
